When is it time to update my print materials?

You know that stack of brochures sitting in the corner of your office? The ones with the old logo, the phone number you haven’t had since 2019, and a photo of your previous location? Those need to go. Not in a “maybe someday” way. Now.

Print materials have a shelf life — and knowing when that shelf life has expired is part of running a professional business. Here are the signs it’s time to call in some help.

When is it time to update your print materials?

  • Your logo or brand has changed. This is the big one. All of your collateral needs to tell the same story, and if your logo, color palette, or brand identity has been updated, your printed materials need to follow. Handing someone a business card with last year’s logo while wearing a shirt with the new one is not a good look.
  • Your contact information has changed. Phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, URLs, social handles — any of these can change over the life of your business, and outdated contact information on printed materials is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes small business owners make. If someone can’t reach you because your brochure sent them to a dead end, you’ve already lost them.
  • Your message or style feels dated. If your materials look like they were designed in a different decade — they probably were. Design trends evolve, and so do client expectations. If you’re handing out something you’re not proud of, that’s a sign.
  • Your materials aren’t working. Have your printed pieces actually brought in business? If a brochure or catalog hasn’t delivered the results you expected, it might not be a print problem — it might be a message or design problem. Either way, it’s worth a closer look.
