The East Side Turkey

Thanksgiving turkeys in Milwaukee.

For those who live in Milwaukee, the East Side Turkey is a fairly common site. The population of turkeys suddenly showed up a few years ago, much to the delight (and sometimes chagrin) of the neighborhood. On my morning walks on the east side, I often see the turkeys trotting around – sometimes in Lake Park, where I took the photo above, and sometimes in my own small yard. No, seriously. Video below.

Growing up in Milwaukee, I don’t remember encountering wildlife any more exotic than a squirrel or a duck – maybe the occasional goose. The turkeys are certainly a treat for me, a thrill every time I see one. I’m thankful that this wild population has found a safe place to live in my home town, where folks pretty much leave them to live to their turkey lifestyles as they wish.

I am also thankful I have a career that allows me the flexibility to work from home, a long-time benefit of self-employment that turned out to be a vital benefit during pandemic. I am thankful to all my clients – whose trust allows me to continue working as I wish – at home amongst the turkeys.

Wishing you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
