The internet should be a place for all, shouldn’t it? In the US, the American Disabilities Act (ADA) has been guiding how public spaces and buildings need to be designed for a long time now. Why shouldn’t that be the same for websites? After all, your website is your place of business too, right? Shouldn’t it be equally accessible to everyone?
The ADA laws were revised in 2024 to define websites as a “place of public accommodation”, which includes privately owned websites. Currently 96% of websites do not pass basic accessibility testing – so if your site is not accessible, you are part of the crowd. You may also have heard about companies being targeted for accessibility lawsuits – and not just big companies. Small privately owned companies are also receiving demand letters.
So – what’s the response? I say let’s get ahead of it. It’s business insurance, for sure. It’s also the right thing to do.
